Stay Simple.
Choose one flavor and color when making your selection.
Keep it simple and have as few tiers as possible.
Each time a baker has to mix something different, you'll
pay. If you really want those fancy touches, try
to limit them to the top layer only, which is the
smallest. Have the rest of the cake frosted in
basic butter cream with simple trimming. Lavish
detailing, like hand-painted flowers with edible
24-karat gold, can double or triple you price.
You're
hip if you're square.
The plain fact is that a square cake feeds more people
than a round one do. A two-tier 14-inch round cake
serves approximately 75-80 people, while a two-tier
14-inch square cake serves approximately 80-100.
If you can find a baker who will charge you by the cake
rather than the serving, you will save tremendously.
Have a
decoy.
Have a small beautiful cake on display that you can cut
for feeding each other and for photos. Keep the
simply decorated, but much less expensive sheet cakes,
waiting in the wings. No one will know, since
waiters quickly whisk out the pre-cut slices soon after
you feed each other the first bites.
Check
your package.
Many hotels/restaurants will include a wedding cake as
part of you catering package. You should check
with them first. You'll be surprised by the selection.
Things taste pretty good when they're free!
